How do you break pregnancy news to coworkers and boss at work?

I have read that you should tell your boss first, so that he doesn't hear it from someone else first. But I also have 2 very good friends who are also coworkers. Do I tell them first but swear them to secrecy? Do I tell my boss first? I even considered getting all 3 in the same room and break the news at the same time... What do you guys think?

  1. Friends are friends not coworkers. Tell them first. Your boss needs to be told only when you are past your third trimester but before you start showing.
  2. I think telling them all at once is great. That way they don't hear it from somebody else. Goodluck!!!
  3. I broke down crying on the sales floor in front of the district manager. I wouldn't do that though. I would tell your friends frist. Then go straight to your boss before anyone has a chance to get to him/her first.
  4. Tell your boss first then right after that tell your co-workers
  5. Well to me I would tell my friends first. They are the ones that are going to be happier about it then your boss. And I really didnt know that there was a "policy" that states you have to tell your boss you are pregnant. But I guess they do need to know one way or the other. I would tell your friends and then tell your boss with your other coworkers present and tell them at once.
  6. Why should it matter who you tell first? I wouldn't care at all...as long as that you tell them it shouldn't matter who knows first.
  7. Check out you maternity leave requirements, and also look at your relatonship with your boss. After my partner and family my boss was the next one to know. We get on great even to the extent that he was diagnosed with shingles on monday and rang me to let me know so i could check with my doctor. It also depends on what sort of work you do , I had to be taken off as first reponse for fire evacuations. Good Luck
  8. I'm not sure about your job, but I am a teacher. I would tell my boss asap so they can find someone to cover my maternity leave. BUT I would not tell anyone else just yet. I would have to take off work for dr's appointments, etc so I would tell my boss asap. After that I would tell maybe 1 or 2 CLOSE friends and ask them to keep it secret. When I was ready for the world to know (or when people started asking!) I would probably just send out a mass email to my building. That way everyone would know at the same time, and no one gets left out.
