How does downtown Memphis compare to downtown San Francisco?

I would love to vacation in San Fransisco this year but the hotel prices may keep me away so I am looking at Memphis as a cheaper alternative. I like the fact the Memphis is the only other major city in America besides San Francisco that can claim it never abandoned its trolley system. Memphis also seems to be full of history. Should I spend the money and go to San Francisco or will Memphis substitute as a good alternative? I am fully aware that Memphis is no San Francisco, but as a tourist, how does its hot spots stack up with Oakland, San Jose and other Bay area cities? I have four days to vacation. Thanks

  1. Memphis doesn't even come close to SF. BUT if you want a less expensive alternative with tons of history and loads of things to do, come to Nashville rather than Memphis! I was born and raised in SF and lived all over the bay Area as well as Lake Tahoe, CA and Las Vegas, NV. I moved near Nashville 7 1/2 years ago after vacationing here, with my 3 daughters and 3 grandchildren. We all LOVE it here. Four days- or 4 wekks, or even 4 years isn't enough time to do and see all there is in this area. There are many civil war era plantations and mansions to tour, including The Hermitage, Andrew Jackson's home. Of course, Broadway, downtown, is filled with cool honky tonks with free music all day and night and great BBQ. The COuntry Music Hall of Fame is nearby, the Ryman Auditorium has shows all the time, The Grand Ole Opry, Museums, great parks for hiking, a Farmers Market which is open all year, live theater, the Titans football stadium, 2 huge lakes, the beautiful Cumberland River, great shopping and restaurants....... Of course, if you get to SF, there's SO much to do there as well! Wherever you go, Have a blast!
  2. Uh, no. Philadelphia never abandoned its trolley system. New Orleans didn't completely. How about Boston?
